We came. We ate. It was delicious!
The new owners take Mama Sita's Cafe to the next level!
Congratulations are in order to Helen Kabatoff, Lee Petts and Steve Yau who have purchased Mama Sita's Cafe!
The cafe is located in the hub of the Slocan Valley, B.C. downtown Winlaw , (or Winlove , as it was affectionately named by the locals) and it's been long regarded as the cultural happening place in the community for new and old friends alike.
Michael Goodliffe and I were invited to the cafe to enjoy brunch last Sunday. Michael is a published writer and poet, and also my gracious friend offering me his technical expertise and support (as I am a digital dinosaur).
The chef and kitchen manager Steve Yau cooked for us personally. What a treat! Michael had the Smoked Salmon Benny on a buttered crispy english muffin, ocean wise smoked salmon, perfectly poached local eggs, topped with Hollandaise and capers, served with hash browns. The Hollandaise sauce, which is made from scratch every morning with farm fresh free - run eggs and butter is to die for. It 's the best in the West! It makes you want to lick your plate.
I had the newly featured Greek Lamb burger, which is a home made grilled patty topped with feta and sauteed onions, served on a sourdough kaiser bun with tzatziki, fresh spinach and tomato. Yum! My side was a Goddess salad, loaded with fresh greens, red onion, beets, cabbage, carrots, tomato, cucumber and best of all locally grown organic sprouts. I chose the Sesame -Lime -Ginger dressing, one of the 5 house dressings. The other available dressings are Maple - Balsamic , Greek, Mango and Winlove, the latter containing garlic, tahini and nutritional yeast. It all sounds so good; it was hard to settle on just one.
Let me talk a bit about the new owners who have all worked at the cafe for the past few years. The thing they all have in common is their true commitment to providing the community with the best quality food and drinks, and whenever possible, locally sourced to further strengthen the local economy.I am also so very impressed by what they call a new tradition. They served the Winlaw community the first annual free Christmas dinner at Mama Sita's Cafe on December 25th. They fed over 100 people for free!
This was originally Lee's idea to do something for people who are alone and don't have anywhere to go on Christmas. He rallied and secured donations of turkeys and more. The new owners all came together and donated their time and labor to serve up a feast which included not just all the trimmings but also favorite desserts, made from scratch from family recipes handed down from mom and grandma." It's a great way to keep memories alive!" Lee stated. Helen, the super friendly front of house manager, told me that it was a wonderful event and even her children were eager to help out. She is planning on having more fund-raising events, as well as music and arts festivals
throughout the year.
Mama Sita's Cafe has always had a lively music scene with weekly events such as Open Mic Nights on Wednesdays and Diamond Willow on Fridays. They have added Jazz on Sunday with Amie and Kevin and are open to booking more talents on other days. They are always open to suggestions on anything. Get in contact! Check their website! Follow them on Facebook, or just simply come on down and try something from the menu, get take-out or indulge in one of their daily specials or home baked goodies and/or take in an event!
Also worth mentioning, when it comes to special dietary needs, Mama Sita's Cafe's staff is quite knowledgeable. Whether it be gluten free, carnivorous, keto, lactose intolerance or vegan cuisine, there is something for every taste! They even have a kids' corner with a new chalk board for the little loves to write on!
I just love this place and the new take on things. Mama Sita's Cafe is getting better all the time ! ( That's high praise coming from me, the previous owner and creator! )
Great place a must stop when touring the Koots!!
It all sounds wonderful Sita. Barry and I will have to try it out soon.
