The Black Rooster in Castlegar, B.C. - Mama Sita reviews the Classic Bar & Grill

This popular eatery and pub is conveniently located uptown Castlegar, adjacent to the Super 8 hotel and is accessible through the same parking lot as Safeway from Columbia Avenue.

I took my family, including my 4 year old grandson, there for lunch recently and we all had a good time.

Since there was a minor in our company, our server sat us at a comfy booth in the quaint restaurant side. She promptly served us iced glasses of water and brought a hot chocolate for the little man. The kids' drink was the perfect drinking temperature and was quickly consumed by my little love who proudly and politely ordered chicken strips and fries for his lunch himself. The chicken strips were made of "real" chicken breast meat. The kids menu has 5 different choices: hamburger & fries, grilled cheese & fries, chicken fingers and fries, fish and chip and even a Fettuccini Alfredo with a 4 cheese blend for the little gourmet. Choice of drink and a dessert of ice cream with chocolate sauce and whipped cream are included for only $8.50. It is wonderful and stress free to go out to eat with little children when they are getting preferred and speedy treatment. "Hangry" little humans need to get fed right away in my opinion. The Black Rooster has it down, they are super child friendly. There was hardly any time for the big guy to get bored in between courses, and the kids portions were of an adequate size, actually too big for him to finish, even the sweet treat was a big serving for a child.

The main menu is vast and varied.

For appetizers alone, you can find yummy favorites such as classic poutine, wings of all different flavors, dry ribs, calamari and quesadillas, the Four Layer Dip and the Spinach Dip, but also Coconut Steamed Mussels and Tiger prawns.

Our server explained the daily special which was a flavorful plate of pasta, tossed in a tomato cream sauce with veggies and sausage. It sounded enticing but I had my heart set on a Clubhouse Ciabatta with yam fries, the classic chicken and crunchy bacon sandwich with a twist, and my company wanted Canadian Eh Burgers with fries, a good sized Canadian beef burger with bacon and aged Canadian cheddar cheese. Sometimes I just crave classic basic fare or comfort food. The menu of the Black rooster has a lot more to offer from pizzas pies, beef dip, salads (their huge cob salad, for example), traditional pastas, healthy bowls, steaks, in house made Cordon Bleus, dinner entrees, classic desserts like Tiramisu, and too many more items to mention right now.

I have been there many times and have always been satisfied with the consistent food, the portion sizes and the professional on point service. The decor and ambience of the place is just lovely , so it's easy to away time there. I also have fun memories of the pub side with the big bar with 5 big screen TVs, times when I was playing pool with my hubby and enjoying appi specials and one of their many fresh draft beers.

A great go-to location for the whole family, the Black rooster in Castlegar does not disappoint.
